- Kings’ Highway
This ancient caravan and pilgrimage route links many of the famous sites of Jordan – Amman, Mt Nebo, Madaba, Wadi Mujib, Kerak, Dana Biosphere Reserve, Shobak and Petra. Other key locations – Machaerus and Umm Ar-Rasas – are just a short detour from the Highway. Please refer to individual descriptions of each of these locations.
At least one full day should be set aside to explore many of these locations, however it is popular to “split” the Highway in two; one day to visit all the sites from Amman to Kerak, and a second day to visit those located from Kerak southwards..
South of Petra you can still see some of the original paving stones of the Kings’ Highway beside the bitumen roadway.
